Pekes and Pals Canine Rescue uses the following guidelines and policies when processing applications. We thank you in advance for your understanding of our requirements and perspectives.
If you are looking for a young, tiny dog, we have an excess of families in our area that want the same thing and dogs fitting that description are rare in rescue. People can be on our waiting list for months until the "right fit" comes along.
We give preference to families with small dog experience. It is a common misconception that because a dog is smaller, it is easier to care for. People who have owned a small dog in the past understand their needs and will be given preference. We do adopt to homes without experience but only if they meet our other criteria.
We do not, as a rule, adopt to families with children under the age of 8 years. If you are looking for a tiny dog, like less than 6 lbs., we prefer children to be even older. Some of the larger dogs will do well with a child that is less than 8 years old, and if this is what you are looking for, then we will process your application to see if the other criteria is met.
We require that all animals in the family be spayed or neutered, up-to-date on rabies and distemper/parvo vaccines, and heartworm tested and on prevention. We feel that "responsible" pet owners fit in this category.
Heartworms kill and it only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to infect your dog. We want all dogs in our rescue to be kept on preventative and believe that the way you care for your current pet sets a precedent with regard to how you will care for one from our rescue.
We prefer homes with fenced yards. While this is not necessarily a strict requirement, we firmly take it into consideration when processing applications. If you meet all of our other criteria, but don't have a fenced yard, we will process your application to see if we may still have a match for your family. You must have a plan in place for exercise/potty needs of the adopted dog.
We will NOT adopt a small dog to anyone with property that has a sea wall, dock or canal that is accessible to the pet.
Applicants must be 25 years old or older. At a young age, there are so many aspects of life that can change: a new career, a new home/apartment, a husband, children, etc. With these changes, dog ownership becomes challenging and sometimes impossible. We get dogs into rescue because of these very reasons and have therefore created this policy to ensure that it won't happen to them again.
We are not insinuating that a young adult is a bad pet owner, but we feel that small dogs have very specific needs and it takes a very stable environment for them to thrive.
Dogs can not be adopted as gifts. We take the placement of our dogs very seriously and do not allow them to be adopted as gifts for another. We do this to ensure that the owner of the dog is the right match and we require that a 'meet and greet' take place prior to adoption. The dogs are the ones with the final "approval" for an adoption. They must show us that they are willing to bond with your family.
You must have a vet. If you do not have a pet, we still require that you have given this enough thought to select a vet. In addition, if you have owned a pet in the last five years, we need to know where you took that pet for health care. This is part of the veterinary reference check which helps us to determine if we have a match for your family among our rescues.
We do not reserve dogs. Even if you seem like the perfect match for a particular dog, we will not hold a dog in a foster home to wait for you to get approved. It is not fair to the dog should another, possibly better, match be approved and want to adopt. We recommend that you get approved before you see a dog you want so that when the right match comes along, you will be ready.
Female Only? If you will only adopt a female dog, chances are that your application will be put on a waiting list. Females are rare in rescue and when they do come in, we have many applicants who are already approved and waiting for their right match. The more specific your requirements, the less chance you will find what you want in rescue. We are looking to find the perfect family for each dog as, for us, the dogs are our top priority.
Make sure that Rescue is right for your family. Consider these facts:
Thank you for thinking of adopting a rescue. If you do adopt a dog, you won't regret it!
